Research Assistant, Stimson Center

Position Summary: This is a full-time position designed to support a research project on Chinese military operations, focusing on the 21st Century, through research, analysis, and administration of activities in the Stimson Center’s Defense Strategy and Planning DSP program. The Research Assistant’s primary focus will be on supporting the creation of an original dataset through open-source research on China’s use of military forces. The project will study the military operations and foreign policy statements of the CCP and PLA to understand the motivations, approaches, and outcomes of China’s military actions in support of specific foreign policy objectives.


  • A Bachelor’s degree in related field with 1-2 years relevant experience;
  • Strong interest in Chinese foreign policy and strategic issues, particularly deterrence and coercive diplomacy;
  • Strong command of English and Chinese languages;
  • Excellent research and analytical skills;
  • Familiarity with quantitative and qualitative social science research methods;
  • Demonstrated analytical, research, and writing skills;
  • The ability to work efficiently and independently while showing initiative;
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written;
  • Strong copy-editing skills;
  • Attention to detail and commitment to high quality work;
